Deans Garden Centre, York

The building was constructed using high quality glulam beams to provide a relaxed, natural and attractive appearance. An acoustic ceiling was installed to minimise the sounds of the busy café environment.

Externally the building is constructed using a linear brick produced by the York Handmade Brick company, the bricks were made using a traditional process with clay from the vale of York by local craftsmen. The bricks were chosen to create a contemporary feel whilst blending in and enhancing the existing buildings.

The building was dynamically modelled to determine the optimum passive design solution in terms of window size – both low level manually operated windows and automatically operated ventilation louvres, solar glazing selection and overall thermal mass to provide a naturally cooled and ventilated café area.
